HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE This scholarship program provides financial assistance to students throughout the nation who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity.  Scholarship criteria also includes high school graduation in the spring/summer of 2008, commitment to pursue a bachelor’s degree, and United States citizenship or permanent residency.  The scholarships are given to deserving students each year and range in award value from $2,500 to $20,000. Only one application is needed to apply for both the State and National Scholarships. Application includes four parts:   Deadline:  October 30, 2007

§         Certification Form  (explained online)
§         Tax Form (documentation of income)---a copy of the front page of their parent/guardian’s recent individual federal tax return (1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ or 1099 SSA-Social Security Tax Form). This year marks the 20th Class of Coca-Cola Scholars. Of the 250 Scholars designated, 50 students will receive awards of $20,000 and 200 students will receive $10,000. Applicants are evaluated on the following criteria: Demonstrated leadership in school; Commitment to community; Academic achievement; Part-time employment. High School Senior Timeline:

SEPTEMBER

  • Register to take the SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests. If you have difficulty paying the registration fee, contact your guidance counselor regarding a fee waiver.
  • Schedule a time to meet with your high school guidance counselor. Your counselor is a great resource to help with your college planning efforts.
  • Contact the admission office of schools that interest you.
  • Look for private scholarships sponsored by your community organizations; school and civic scholarships; government grants; government-assisted loans; work-study programs; etc.

OCTOBER & NOVEMBER

  • Attend college fairs to meet school representatives and gather information.
  • Return your admission applications.
  • Choose the right people to write your recommendation letters. Be considerate and give them plenty of time to prepare your letter.
  • Begin completing applications and working on essays.
  • Arrange campus visits.
  • Narrow the selection to your top college choices; then request financial aid information from these schools.
  • Run scholarship searches via the internet.

DECEMBER & JANUARY

  • Check with each school’s financial aid office regarding deadlines.
  • Collect family tax information.
  • Complete FAFSA and submit as soon after January 1 as possible.
  • Continue your search for scholarships.

FEBRUARY & MARCH

  • Stay on top of financial aid and college deadlines.
  • Promptly respond to requests from college admission and financial aid offices.

APRIL & MAY

  • Finalize your college decision. Next, notify financial aid offices where you’ve applied about your decision.
  • Promptly respond to requests from college admission and financial aid offices.

JUNE – AUGUST

    • Complete the necessary load applications
    • Verify with your counselor that your high school transcripts have been sent.
    • Complete final documents you received from your college.
    • Finalize your budget for the year.
    • Attend orientation.
    • Time to start packing.
