CVCS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NAMES KEN NIPP AS GIRLS HEAD BASKETBALL COACH

May 19, 2009

San Juan Capistrano, CA – Coach Ken Nipp comes to CVCS Girls Basketball with eighteen years of basketball coaching experience.  He was an Assistant Coach this past season for the Lady Eagles.  Ken started coaching basketball in 1988 as the Director of Basketball at Westminster’s First Chinese Baptist Church.  He spent four years there before becoming the Executive Director of the Inter-Church League in Orange County where he also served as the Head Coach of the men’s team for five years.  Ken started coaching girls in 2000 with Upward Basketball in Whittier before becoming the Head Coach for the Kids in Sports Girl’s team in Los Angeles.   He spent two years as a player-Head Coach in the Men’s Division of the Chinese American Amateur Basketball Association.  Before starting at CVCS, Coach Nipp was the Head Coach of the South East Youth Organization Girl’s Basketball program.  As you can see, his basketball experience is very broad as it crosses both gender and age differences.  This has made Coach Nipp a versatile and solid coach with a deep basketball IQ to draw from.

Ken emigrated from Hong Kong to America and lived in a poor African-American neighborhood in San Francisco.  His basketball abilities saved him from the bad influences of the neighborhood and it gave him respect from the neighborhood kids.  Later, while playing high school basketball, Ken received Christ as Lord and Savior in a basketball outreach sponsored by a local church.  He played for that church’s club travel team in high school and began using basketball as an outreach tool ever since 1976.

“I believe that basketball is an outreach tool for those players who do not know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.  Through this sport, Christian character will be developed through team devotionals, fellowship, practice, and good sportsmanship,” Coach Nipp said recently.  He went on to say that “Players are prepared for society as young adults through diligence in conditioning, discipline in practice, teamwork on and off the court, and healthy competition.  Players will be encouraged to be scholar athletes.  The team will also strive to find an opportunity to give back to the community through a service project.  I would love to take the basketball team to the next level.”

Ken has a B.S. in marketing and MBA in finance.  He earned his CFP® designation in 2003. He was on the Advisory Board for the BIOLA University School of Business, Officer at the First Chinese Baptist Church, and currently serves as an usher at Christ Community Church.

Ken joined State Farm Insurance in 2002 and is responsible for driving financial service sales in Los Angeles County. Prior to joining State Farm, he was with Morgan Stanley for over 10 years and was an Associate Vice President.  He had a brief tenure with the County of Orange as a financial and strategic planning analyst.  He was also as a Federal Bank regulator during the savings and loan crisis in the ‘80s.

Ken has been married since 1989 and has three daughters.
