6/1/10  Strong Broncs Take CVC For Tough Ride At Kern Valley's Field

The Kern Valley Broncs showed just how good they are by shutting out the Eagles in the CIF semifinals 9-0. The Eagles had a great season, though, finishing as league champions with 20 wins (if you count 2 canceled games by TVT--CVC potentially could have broken the softball record of 21 wins).  In her last high school career at bat, Jesica Balmer hit a double in the 5th inning to spoil the Broncs no-hitter.

5/27/10  20th Win Is Upset Of #4 Victor Valley Christian--Eagles Advance To CIF Final Four!!

Sarah Maness started it off in the first inning with a double and then scored the first run, Kelsey Hodge had 2 hits in the game, Jesica Balmer had 2 hits including a double and 4 RBIs as the host Eagles scored 4 runs in each of the first 2 innings, putting the #4 seed in a huge hole before they could get their offense untracked. The 11-4 final score places the Eagles in CVCS' first ever Final Four semifinals in a non-enrollment-based playoff bracket in any sport.  The '02 and '99 softball teams had reached the semis but the playoff bracketing criteria used by CIF was different then.

5/24/10  Jesica Balmer Selected For The Soroptimist North-South All Star Game
Jesica was selected to play catcher for the south team in the annual game featuring some of the best seniors in Orange Co.  The game will be played at Cal State Fullerton on June 9 at 6:30 PM.  Congratulations Jesica!

5/20/10  Nelson's 2-Out Bases Loaded Pinch Hit The Key To Victory In First Round Action

Sophomore Kelli Nelson waited the whole game for her chance and delivered to break open a close game and the Eagles survived against surprising NuView Bridge.  The score was tied at one going into the bottom of the 6th and the Eagles' only run so far had come on another CVC 2 out double steal in the 2nd inning (this time it was Jessica Nipp staying in the pickle long enough for Bronwyn Seward to score from third).  NuView tied the score in the 4th on a 2 out RBI triple.  NuView threatened again in the 5th as their first batter belted a long hit to left centerfield (no fence).  Sarah Maness' hustle and speed, then perfect strong throw on the money to Bronwyn, then Bronwyn's strong throw to Jesica Balmer changed the whole momentum of the game as Jesica held on to the ball in the tag collision at home plate.  So then in the Eagles' half of the 6th, after Balmer had doubled in Franny Manzo, with 2 outs and runners at 2nd and 3rd, Jessica Nipp was walked loading the bases for Nelson's heroics.

5/7/10  Eagles Sweep Koalas To Complete First Season In San Joaquin League
Chloe Purgason and Sarah Maness both hit homeruns to lead the Eagles in the 9-5 victory in Anaheim.  CVCS finishes the league season with a 10-2 record with their overall record currently at 17-8 and counting.

5/6/10  "White Out" Day Successful--League Championship Earned

The team wore solid white and defeated EC 5-2 avoiding a 3 way tie and claiming the title outright.  Facing the tiebreaker scenario that had EC winning any tie for first because of a blind draw done by the league president before the season started, your Lady Eagles knew they had to win this game to capture the undisputed championship.  Senior Jesica Balmer started the scoring with an RBI triple in the 2nd inning off of the league's best pitcher Nicole Love.  Later, in the 5th inning and a 2-2 tie, CVCS "manufactured" three runs and then the defense held on for two more innings.  Sophomore Franny Manzo led the team by going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs.  Seniors honored in a pregame ceremony as it was their last regular season home game:  Jesica Balmer, Bronwyn Seward, Taylor LaFrance, Audrey Montes, Sarah Maness and Caitlyn Kelly.

4/23/10  Eagles Knock SVC Out Of First With Convincing 9-1 Victory

Showing much more patience and a better defense than in Tuesday's loss to the Warriors in the "rain game", the Eagles knocked out SVC from the first place 3 way tie that also includes Eastside Christian and CVCS.  In the first inning Sarah Maness and Franny Manzo executed a perfect first-and-third double steal to score the first run of the game, providing the lift the team needed.

4/16/10  Eagles Spend Softball Weekend In San Luis Obispo
Feeling the effects of the drive, then the shortened warmup period, the Eagles finally awoke in the 7th inning but their rally ended with the bases loaded and they lost to Mission Prep for the second straight year 6-8.  To Mission's credit, their second baseman made a diving stop to help thwart the rally bid.  Saturday, the team attended the Cal Poly SLO/ CS Fullerton softball doubleheader (CVCS alum Capri Ruiz plays for Cal Poly).  Sunday morning the team hiked up Bishop's Peak near the campus.  Informal church/devotional time was held right in the middle of the trail even as many other hikers passed.

3/27/10  Eagles Take 2 Games At The LaJolla Country Day Tournament
Scores of the 4 game tourney:  CVCS def. Guajome Park Acad. 8-7 and Desert Mirage 7-0 but lost to Canyon Crest Academy 4-8 and to host LJCD 5-6.  Highlights include:  Jessica Nipp .600 on base percentage;  Sarah Maness .500 batting average plus a fabulous over the head catch in centerfield;  Franny Manzo pitched 15 innings with no earned runs; Kelsey Hodge's homerun over the high fence was the first ever at the newly renovated LJCD softball field.

3/23/10  Eagles Battle Back Against Warriors, Earn 1st League Victory
Spotting SVC 4 runs in the first inning, CVCS eventually came from behind to take a 9-7 lead.  The Warriors threatened in the top of the 7th by loading the bases with 2 outs but the Eagles held on for the win.  Jordan Hodge was the winning pitcher and Franny Manzo earned the save in the 7th.  Bronwyn Seward hit a leadoff homerun in the 2nd inning to ignite the comeback.  CVCS finished the game with 10 hits.

3/20/10  Kelsey Hodge Earns All Tournament Team

In the five-game Costa Mesa H.S. Mustang softball tournament, played over 8 days, Kelsey batted .539 with 7 hits including 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, 2 walks, and 2 stolen bases.  She also scored 8 runs as CVCS lost to Aliso Niguel, Cerritos, Costa Mesa Estancia, and defeated Fountain Valley Los Amigos and Santa Ana H.S.  Other tournament highlights:  Jessica Nipp .813 on base percentage; Taylor LaFrance 6 hits; Sarah Maness home run vs. Los Amigos. In the Santa Ana game, Franny Manzo pitched in relief, coming in with the game tied in the 4th inning, no one out, and the bases loaded. She earned a strikeout, then a ground ball to third/force out at home, and then one more strikeout to retire the side.

3/19/10  Eagles Experience Tough Love In Extra Innings League Opener
Eastside Christian pitcher Nicole Love not only scored the winning run but recorded 10 strikeouts, fooling many batters with on the corner called 3rd strikes, and had 4 of Eastside's hits including a 6th inning double that tied the score (Jesica Balmer tagged out the trailing runner at the plate on this same hit to end the inning) as well as the leadoff single in the bottom of the 9th, which became the winning run.  In the top of the 9th, the Eagles had a shot to take the lead as they loaded the bases after 2 outs but Sarah Maness' potential tie breaking line drive was grabbed by Eastside's centerfielder.

3/5/10  Softball Team "2" Much On The Island
The Lady Eagles breezed to opening wins on Catalina (21-0, 11-1) as Hannah Spraker went 4 for 5 with 4 RBIs and Franny Manzo 4 for 4 while pitching a five inning no hit shutout in the first game of the season opening doubleheader vs. the Avalon H.S. Lancers.  CVCS had 30 hits total in the 2 games while Jordan Hodge picked up the pitching victory in the 2nd game.
