Mr. Ryan Van Rensselaer

Coach Van Rensselaer started playing volleyball in 1987 for Laguna Beach High School and El Toro High School. He attended Orange Coast College where he was the starting setter and earned multiple at the Conference and State level. In 1992, Van Rensselaer began  training for AVP qualification tournaments. 

Coach Van Rensselaer started at 949 Athletics in the boys program in 2011. Over the years, he has coached at a high level, earning bids to Junior Nationals and heading the CIF Championships. In 2013-2016, his team was Div 5 CIF Champions, State Semi-Finalist and Coach Van Rensselaer was named Coach of the year. In 2016 he led his team to a Division 3 State Championship. From Division 4, his team was moved up into Division 2, where in 2019 they won the CIF Championship.  He has also dabbled in the american beach, and was part of the American Beach Volleyball National Champions at 12’s, 14’s, 16’s level.  

Before joining CVCS in 2020, Coach Van Rensselaer was the head volleyball coach at Saddleback Valley Christian where the team achieved incredible success on and off the court. During his time there, the Warriors won five CIF Championships and moved from Division 5 to Division 1. Coach Van Rensselaer was also named the CIF Coach of the Year four times and led the boys’ volleyball team to a State Championship in 2016. 

Coach Van Rensselaer has a strong coaching philosophy to honor God before honoring self. He trains young men to be successful sons, friends, athletes, students, future husbands, and fathers by being in the Word of God. He creates a vision for what the team wants to accomplish and then holds them accountable to this. He encourages his team to spend time outside of volleyball serving together.
