Rick Curtis – Athletic Director / Head Football Coach
Rick Curtis is a graduate of Mission Viejo High School and earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Cal State Fullerton and his teaching credential from the University of California, Irvine. Rick earned his master's degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University where he is currently an adjunct professor and academic advisor in the School of Professional Studies.
Rick began his coaching career at Servite High School and his teaching career in the Irvine Unified School District at University High School. Rick taught Accounting, Business Management, and Marketing, and Physical Education during his teaching assignments. Rick coached at University, Irvine, and Northwood in Irvine. While at Irvine High School, Rick was the athletic director while also coaching football, basketball, track, softball, and golf during his tenure. With Rick as the defensive coordinator the football team secured three consecutive CIF SS championships.
Rick opened Northwood High School as its athletic director and head football coach in 1999. Rick received the NFL's Coach of the Week award in October of 2000 and was a recipient of the CIF Southern Section's Pursuing Victory with Honor in 2001. Rick and his staff were named to coach in the 2004 South Orange County All-Star game and he led his team to a 22 – 8 victory in the annual Orange County classic. Rick led his Northwood teams to the CIF quarterfinals (3 times), the CIF Semi-finals, and to the CIF finals in 2005.
After 14 years at Northwood High School Rick became the head football coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, where his teams set 19 school records, returned to the CIF playoffs, and sent 15 scholarship players to the college ranks. In 2016 Rick accepted his new position as the athletic director and head football coach of Capistrano Valley Christian Schools.
Rick has helped secure scholarships for his players at universities across the country. Coach Curtis’ players are currently playing at Stanford, Oklahoma, USC, UCLA, Washington State, Navy, Michigan, Vanderbilt, Lehigh, New Hampshire, along with several others.
One of Rick’s favorite verses is: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” - Colossians 3:23
Rick and his wife, Mary, are devout Christians and attend Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo. The Curtis’s live in Dove Canyon and are the proud parents of seven children and four grandchildren.
