Grade Level Overview

Spiritual Life 

  • Bible - Students learn about God’s plan for creation, redemption, and salvation through Jesus Christ. Students survey the Old Testament and learn about God’s grace and power through the lives of Adam and Eve, Abraham and Isaac, Jacob and Rachel, Moses, Rahab, Saul, David, and Daniel.
  • Chapel - Students attend chapel weekly in a lively and powerful worship environment. They are exposed to Biblical principles and stories through weekly speakers. 
  • Scripture Memorization - Students are expected to memorize one verse a week that aligns with our Deep Roots Bible curriculum.

Academic

  • Language Arts:
    • Phonics - Students apply advanced decoding and word analysis skills to read multisyllabic words accurately and fluently by recognizing common prefixes, suffixes, root words, and syllable patterns.
    • Reading Fluency - Students read grade-level text with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression to support comprehension. Students are expected to self-correct when needed, use punctuation cues for phrasing, and reread as necessary to clarify meaning and build confidence. 
    • Reading Comprehension - Students learn to understand and analyze both literary and informational texts by identifying main ideas, key details, characters, setting, and plot, as well as making predictions and inferences, and comparing texts. 
    • Language Usage - Students learn to use correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling in speaking and writing. Students apply the parts of speech to understand and apply sentence structure and to develop an understanding of content-specific vocabulary. 
    • Writing - Students create their own personal narrative, expository, and persuasive piece while understanding stylistic techniques and structure through the Writer’s Workshop method. 
    • Listening and Speaking - Students actively participate in conversations by listening carefully, taking turns, and staying on topic, as well as asking and answering questions to clarify understanding. Students practice speaking clearly and coherently.
  • Mathematics - Students develop fluency with multiplication and division, understand fractions as numbers, and apply place value to round and perform multi-digit addition and subtraction. Students also work with area, perimeter, time, measurement, and data interpretation, while strengthening problem-solving and reasoning skills. 
  • Social Studies - Students explore how communities have developed over time by studying local history, geography, government, economics, and cultural traditions. Map skills, historical timelines, and field trips contribute to their understanding. 
  • Science - Students are introduced to God’s creation through hands-on, inquiry based learning across four key areas: life science, earth and space science, physical science, and the human body. Students explore topics such as ecosystems and habitats, energy, force, Earth’s atmosphere, astronomy, and body systems all while developing observation, classification, and experimentation skills with a biblical worldview that emphasizes God as the Creator and sustainer of life. 
  • Cursive Handwriting - Students learn correct cursive letter and number formations from daily, systematic instruction. 
  • Physical Education - Students refine locomotor and manipulative skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching and kicking with improved control and coordination. Students demonstrate teamwork and good sportsmanship while modeling Christ-like behavior during games and activities. They also understand the benefits of regular physical activity for health and fitness. 
  • Music - Students explore and enjoy music through listening, singing, moving, and playing instruments. They also learn to sing with accurate pitch and rhythm by understanding tempo, dynamics, and melody. They use their voices and bodies to worship our loving God.
  • Art - Students expand their creativity and skill by exploring different materials, tools, and techniques. Students use lines, shapes, colors, and textures to create their own artwork while developing an appreciation of God’s creativity and design. 
  • Spanish - Students build basic vocabulary and understand simple sentence structures related to everyday topics like family, school, weather, and daily activities. They develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through interactive activities, while deepening their understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.

Other Information:

  • Teacher/Student ratio: Approximately 20:1
  • School Day: Monday-Friday: 8:15-3:00pm
  • Morning Recess: 25 minutes
  • Lunch/Recess: 45 minutes
  • Classroom Structure: Core subjects taught by the classroom teacher with support from the  instructional aide
  • Enrichment classes taught by specialty teachers: Physical Education, Art, Music, and Spanish
