Special Subjects

The five special subjects complement the core academic subjects at each grade level. All children at every grade level study art, Spanish, music, library, and physical education with faculty members who specialize in that discipline.

Technology skills and concepts are incorporated within the context of core and specialty courses.

Spanish

Elementary Spanish classes are fun, engaging, inspiring, and encouraging. Students develop an appreciation for and an understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures around the world. The curriculum challenges language learners to build their Spanish speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through interactive games, innovative apps, creative lessons, stories, and conversations.

Physical Education

The CVCS physical education program provides our students an engaging, positive, fun, and safe environment for each student to be able to explore movement through fitness, a variety of team sports, and many other age appropriate activities. Our goal is to inspire our students to be active and value living a healthy lifestyle while emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, and giving their best effort. Our fifth through eighth grade students participate in physical fitness testing twice a year. Our elementary classes have PE class three times per week while the junior high meets each day.

Library

The library is a welcoming, cozy space for students to explore reading options, listen to stories, and have quiet reading time to themselves. All elementary school students regularly visit the library for accelerated reader activities with the librarian or choose new books for their reading. Students check out books during their designated library time with support and guidance from the librarian and participate in in-library lessons and storytime. The librarian works with teachers in the older grades to develop homeroom-based book talks, lessons, and research support.

Technology Literacy

Capistrano Valley Christian Schools offers a fully integrated approach to computer education. Rather than providing instruction in using computers or devices—skills many children have already mastered by kindergarten—we have developed a broad curricular initiative focused on technology, creativity, and innovation. At every grade level, our environment is technology-rich while maintaining a proper balance to ensure students have adequate but limited screen time. Our lower elementary classrooms feature iPad sets and one-to-one laptops in fourth through twelfth grade. Classrooms are equipped with Apple TV to allow teachers to teach from anywhere in the room.
