At Capistrano Valley Christian Schools, technology plays a central role in a learning experience that is uniquely creative, engaging, and collaborative. CVCS students create authentic work for real audiences while being prepared for academic success and future career opportunities.

Technology Outcomes

Similar to our Portrait of a Graduate, our K-12 Technology Outcomes represent the four areas we strive to see our students grow in their use and understanding of technology.

Digital Citizen: Students recognize the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living, learning, and working in an interconnected digital world, and they use technology in ways that are safe, legal, and Christlike.
Digital Learner: Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Digital Communicator: Students communicate clearly and produce compelling artifacts to express themselves using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to their goals.
Digital Innovator: Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.

Technology Standards

The specific skills and standards we teach students throughout their time at CVCS are outlined in our TK-12 Technology Scope & Sequence. This document comprises 71 technology standards across 11 skills, organized into two major parts:

Part 1: Basic Operations and Applications – This collection of standards emphasizes students’ ability to use technology tools effectively to complete tasks, create work, and accomplish goals.

TK-12 Scope and Sequence

Grade Level Details

Elementary

Elementary students at CVCS build the foundations for confident and responsible technology use by emphasizing basic device skills, keyboarding, file management, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet skills, multimedia tools, and age-appropriate research habits. They also begin practicing digital citizenship through safe technology use, personal information protection, source citation, media awareness, and healthy screen habits.

Our elementary students use iPads in strategic, age-appropriate ways during the school day. These classroom sets are not take-home devices, and we limit screentime by using iPads only when they meaningfully support learning, creativity, or skill development. In Grades 2-6, iPads include keyboard cases to support typing, writing, and productivity skills.

Junior High

Building on the foundations developed in Elementary, Junior High students at CVCS use technology with increasing independence, judgment, and creativity. Students strengthen their skills with documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email, cloud storage, multimedia production, and online collaboration while applying them to more complex academic and creative work. They also begin more advanced work in privacy, fair use, media evaluation, digital wellness, 3D design, and responsible generative AI use.

Our Junior High students use take-home MacBook Neos as they transition from shared classroom devices to more independent technology use. These devices support classroom learning, homework, research, communication, and creative projects while giving students consistent access to Canvas, where Junior High classes post syllabi, assignments, resources, and grades. High School

High School students use technology with independence, purpose, and discernment across academic, creative, and professional contexts. They are expected to demonstrate mastery of core tools for productivity, research, communication, collaboration, media creation, data analysis, and file management. They also deepen their understanding of privacy, media credibility, copyright, digital wellness, responsible online participation, and ethical generative AI use. Through polished work for authentic audiences, students prepare for college, career, and lifelong learning.

High School students use take-home MacBook Airs as they apply technology with increasing independence, purpose, and discernment. These devices support advanced academic work, research, collaboration, communication, and creative production while giving students consistent access to Canvas, where High School classes post syllabi, assignments, resources, and grades. Apple Distinguished School

Apple Distinguished Schools are “centers of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrate Apple’s vision for learning with technology.” As of 2026, this certification is bestowed upon schools that meet the following criteria:

Established one-to-one program: A one-to-one iPad or Mac program for students and educators in two or more grades within the school has been in place for more than two academic years. All students and educators use Apple devices as their primary learning or teaching device.
Innovative use of the Apple platform: Students and educators deeply integrate Apple apps, educational apps from the App Store, and other digital resources into the curriculum to create new learning opportunities.
Leadership and faculty proficiency with iPad or Mac: Leadership and faculty are highly proficient in the use of Apple products and regularly use them to innovate in the school.
Leadership team dedicated to continuous innovation: The school has an established leadership team that is dedicated to advancing the vision of learning in the school. The team must include the head of school, a district leader, a technology leader, a teacher leader, and at least one other leader at the school who is focused on continuous innovation.

Beginning with MacBooks for high school students and faculty in the Fall of 2024, CVCS is in the process of becoming a school where age-appropriate Apple devices are used by every student and teacher at every grade level. This transition will be completed in the Fall of 2026 with the rollout of MacBooks to junior high students and iPads to students in Grades 3-6. CVCS will then apply for Apple Distinguished School status in the fall of 2026 or early 2027.
